Texas Wax/Houston

Texas Wax/Houston, founded in November 2007, is a group of working artists in and near Houston who use beeswax (encaustic) as a medium and share a commitment to exchanging ideas and organizing exhibits.  Through organizational meetings, presentations, and workshops, Texas Wax/Houston provides opportunities for members to share both technical and aesthetic insights while supporting one another’s creative and professional development.

November 2008 was our first year anniversary. In February of 2008, together with our sister organization Texas Wax/Dallas, our first exhibition was held in Dallas at Collaborating Artists Media Project, Inc.  It was planned to coincide with the College Art Association Conference happening in Dallas at the same time. In November 2008, in another collaboration with the Dallas group, our second exhibition, “Some Like It Hot,” was held at the Texas Artists Museum in Port Arthur.  With March came an exhibition opportunity at San Jacinto College-Central in Pasadena. “Fuse” was the title of that exhibition and included only artists from the Houston group.

In May of 2009, M Squared Gallery in Houston Heights hosts our exhibition, “Degrees,” that includes artists from all four Texas Wax groups in Houston, Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio.

Very dear to the hearts of the Houston artists is our newest project, Hive, that addresses the problem of disappearing bee populations known as Colony Collapse Disorder or CCD.  Through panel discussions, exhibitions, and possibly film and performance, we intend to bring more attention to the seriousness of this problem as well as to the importance of the honeybee population to our environment.  A schedule hasn’t been solidified yet for this project but we are expecting our first presentation later this year.

The Houston group generally meets on the second Sunday of each month, at a member’s home or studio.
