Artist's Spotlight: Cheryl McClure

Profile:

Born in Oklahoma, I've lived in north estern Texas most of my life. Currently, I live and work near New London/Overton, TX. I have a husband, three grown children and three grandchildren.

I've been interested in art and painting since I was a child. For over thirty years I've been working seriously as an artist/painter.

I am primarily interested in abstract and non-objective work. Generally, my work with mixed media/collage, acrylic on paper and canvas and encaustic.

Due to my influences, my work is earth/land based and has a landscape feel more often than not. Recently, I moved to a 200 acre north eastern TX farm/ranch after living in a small city nearby for more than 40 years. I feel this will possibly influence more nature oriented work even than before.

Statement

I have been painting for over 30 years. About four years ago I started using encaustic since I love the surface quality I can get with wax. I, also, love being able to use collage elements in my work with encaustic without using glues. The surface quality and color are always elements that are important to my work. Therefore, encaustic painting is such a wonderful medium to explore. Whatever the medium, surface quality and color with good design is what I strive for in my work. I'm influenced by nature and the landscape and hope that others viewing my work will bring their own influences in to complement and interpret what I paint.
