Deanna Wood - Palimpsest
pal-imp-sest - A manuscript, typically of papyrus or parchment, that has been written on more than once, with the earlier writing incompletely erased and often legible. We all have secrets. Things we hide from everyone except ourselves. If you happened to write one down or speak it aloud, could you hide it again? Once revealed, can it be erased? Or does it always leave a trace, to be rediscovered later by someone else? What if you told a secret and didn’t notice the birds sitting silently in the trees around you? What if they suddenly flew away, taking your secrets with them?April 28 2010 - May 22 2010
at Buchanan Gallery, 220 25th Street Galveston Island, TX 77550
Dallas Wax - Melting Point
Exhibiting Artists: Karen Chaussabel, Charlotte Cornett, Linda Disosway, Diane Dorn, Brett Dyer, Peggy Epner, Carolyn Fox-Hearne, Allison Gillies, Laura Griffin, Antoaneta Hillman, Bonny Leibowitz, Teri Lueders, Cheryl McClure, Michelle Pryor, Patty Rooney, Silvia Thornton, VET, Deanna Wood, Mary Wright About the Juror: Simeen Farhat was born in Pakistan and moved to the US in 1992. She has a BFA from Arizona State University and an MFA from Texas Christian University. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and has received many awards and residencies. She is an assistant adjunct professor at the University of Texas, Arlington. She states that frequent trips to Pakistan “made me observe the changes in the socio-political environment there and the relationship, and conflict, between the Islamic and the Western Worlds; both as an outsider and insider. One of the changes I have noticed has been the growing trend of veiling by Muslim women. Although I retain many aspects of my cultural upbringing, at times I have found myself becoming more westernized. As a result, I often feel myself caught in the middle; although it helps me to observe things from multi-perspectives. All this global and personal chaos, and conflict, inspired me, as an artist, to create this new body of work: female forms, sometimes hollow; with words coming out of their mouths.” You can see more of her work on her website: http://www.simeen.net/April 28 2010 - May 08 2010
at Art Centre of Plano, 1039 East 15th St. Plano, TX 75074
Gwendolyn Plunkett - Locating Beauty - Skin Deep
A collection is an accumulation of objects, ideas or behaviors gathered systematically or randomly by one person, a group of people or by nature that when observed together impart meaning. These collections provide pleasure, comfort and information. Rituals are collections of particular behaviors repeated on a timely basis, usually with some specific outcome in mind. Skin Deep, Slow Burn and Organic Compounds are new additions to my on-going Ritual & Collections Series. The repetitive mark used in some of these works is made with a wood-burning tool. Handmade Japanese and Thai papers are torn, sometimes burned and painted with encaustic, (molten beeswax and Damar resin) and then fused to a wood panel with the wax and heating tool. The surface is worked further with additional marks, melted wax and oil bar. In essence, these pieces are non-objective paintings or collages, not paintings of skin. The organic translucent nature of the medium, (beeswax,) the layering of materials and the repetitive process of scarring the surface, together create tactile skin-like surfaces that suggest and exaggerate, repel or seduce.April 28 2010 - May 22 2010

Opening Reception for "The E-Word: Recent Works by Marilyn Fenn"

The art exhibition of paintings by Marilyn Fenn, “The E Word,” explores life at different scales: from the elements of evolution to the essentials of our environment, and on to the endless reaches of space. Through the interplay and juxtaposition of the micro with the macro, I try to depict on canvas what nature could do in the world, but hasn’t gotten around to yet.
